A visit to the incredibly popular South Mainland allows you to really take in Shetland’s most beautiful scenery and experience the different breeds of birds that seek Shetland as a home throughout the years, including puffins. The South Mainland tour can also boast the Sumburgh lighthouse, The Crofthouse Museum, Scatness, Jarlshof, Quendale and the illustrious St Ninians Isle, which is Britain’s largest tombolo and you might even find some treasure! This tour is a minimum of three hours.
If you wish to visit the North Mainland, it will take a minimum of three hours and will allow you to visit the spectacular, one-of-a-kind cliffs of Eshaness. On the way there is Mavis Grind where you will see the meeting of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The likes of Britain’s best Fish & Chip shop is also situated on the way!
However, if you are not wanting to go to the end of the Earth then there are shorter tours available. You could visit Shetland’s ancient capital of Scalloway which features some unreal views across the sea to Burra and beyond. If you are a fan of historic places, the still ever-standing Scalloway Castle can be visited and entered, and it dates back to 1599! The Scalloway Museum and the slip which was famous for the Shetland Bus in WW2 are also based in Scalloway.
